The Hilbert “holds the distinction of being the only museum in the world committed to tracing the rich, iconic history of the Golden State.” Presented are works by leading California artists from the late 1800s to the present.
One of the highlights is the many pieces from the California Master, Millard Sheets, including the mosaic façade of the museum, “Going to the Beach.”
In the 1950s, “Sheets was commissioned by Howard F. Ahmanson to design Home Savings Bank branches throughout Southern California that would serve as community landmarks by expressing "community values" or presenting "a celebratory version of the community history.” To accomplish this goal, Sheets designed his branch buildings with exterior façades containing large mosaic works depicting local heritage. Besides 40 paintings by Sheets in the Hilbert collection his works are shown at major museums such as the Chicago Art Institute, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, the National Gallery, and the Los Angeles County Museum.

Heaven On Earth!
OCLB Annual Yosemite Trip!
Orange County/Long Beach
goes to
Yosemite National Park
Curry Village Canvas Tents
May 17-20, 2024
Need we say more?
Yes we will! We will be heading to Yosemite at the BEST time to visit this illustrious National Park! The weather will be amazing with the waterfalls at their most dynamic! Our lodging for the 3-night outing will be in Camp Curry, in unheated canvas tents.
Yosemite is one of the most popular National Parks in the country and we in southern California are very fortunate to have it so close. If you have never seen it then this Great Outdoors trip is a good opportunity for you to be introduced to this special place.
If you have been there one or more times, then you’ll understand why many have made a Yosemite visit an annual event. The grandeur and majesty of the park are so enriching that Yosemite can be experienced and enjoyed again and again. The natural beauty of the park has inspired many for the last 150 years, but perhaps none more effusive than John Muir, who said of Yosemite, “It is by far the grandest of all the special temples of Nature I was ever permitted to enter.” Please join us in this temple of the great outdoors.
The location of this trip will be Yosemite Valley. Our accommodations are canvas tents in Camp Curry, a rustic but charming village near the east end of the valley.
Arrival should be about 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon.
For both Saturday and Sunday, there will be optional hikes to choose from - one will be strenuous, the other will be easy to moderate.
On Monday morning we must check out of the cabins by 11:00 am.
More details will be announced as we finalize registration.
Canvas Tents:
We have secured three canvas tents for our group.
Each tent has 3 single beds and a double. We can max out at 5 people per tent. We are hoping to get a couple or friends (with benefits or without benefits) to share the double bed. This way we can max out each tent with 5 people so that we can get as many as possible to experience Yosemite for this excursion.
Driving & Directions:
We will review carpooling options once registration is finalized both to save the environment and save on fuel costs.
Photos: Previous OCLB Yosemite Treks
What else?
Cooking facilities/campfire rings are not available in Curry Village. However, there are several dining options near our cabins.
Such as Pizza & Beer, Cafeteria (with Vegan options!) and of course burgers & fries too. A general store is also open for purchasing food items and other material goods. You may bring snack food and drinks, but all food and scented items must be stored in the bear-proof storage locker in front of the cabin. This includes all food, food related items, toiletries, sundries and ice chests. Bears have a strong sense of smell and are attracted to anything they think will lead them to human food. Remember not to store these items in your vehicle or canvas tent . It is recommended to use sealed plastic containers for storing your food inside the bear boxes. This makes it easier to keep your food organized, and away from campground critters.
Showers, sinks and flush toilets are all available to participants.
Be sure to remember a flashlight or headlamp to find your way around Camp Curry at night. In addition, a sleeping bag (recommended), an extra blanket or a honey bunny may help keep you warm at night. Other things to bring:
•Warm outer gear appropriate for snow and/or rain or Shorts and T-shirts for warm days
•Layered under gear (long underwear, etc.)
•Hat, gloves, scarf, etc.
•Sunglasses, sun block (for your face), lip balm
•Sturdy hiking shoes
State Covid Protocols will be enforced.
Weather: Average temperatures in May in the Yosemite Valley range from the high 40s/low 50s (night time) to the low-mid 70s during the day. Conditions may vary between sun, clouds, rain, or snow. Be prepared for anything. Expect the unexpected!
The trip leader will inform you of the weather conditions a couple days before our arrival but you may also want to keep abreast of them by using the Yosemite National Park website. (Click here.)
Price:
$200 for Great Outdoors members.
This is a members only event, thus an annual membership ($25) must be purchased prior to signing up for this event.
If you have a LOUD snoring issue, you should consider not attending so that others will not be affected by the noise. This is close sleeping quarters.
Cancellations will be authorized up to 14 days prior to start day of event if a replacement can be found; a $10 cancellation fee will be charged.
Trip Leader: Lance Whitmier
Lance states: Yosemite mesmerized me the very first time I visited the Park in the 90's. I always brag about the majestic beauty of Yosemite along with it's grandeur and power. I claim that Yosemite is indeed "my Heaven on Earth" and I can't wait to share the experience with you!" For those visiting Yosemite for the first time - be prepared to experience a bit of heaven and the surreal!

Up For a Moderate/Advanced Hike to
San Gabriel Peak!
Distance: 8 miles | Elevation gain: 1422 ft
Join us on Sunday, May 19 at 8:00 am for a challenging moderate hike.
HIKE RATING
Just to give you an idea how I rate hikes, here is my scale:
Easy: Mostly flat, some slight gentle elevation gain. Moderate: Some elevation gain. Easy trail and fire roads. Not too steep for the most part. Moderate/Advance: Moderate elevation gain. Easy trail. Steep in parts. Some shade. Advanced: A lot of elevation gain across short distances. Some shade. A lot of sun. Advanced/Challenging: Hikes over 8 miles with challenging trails with a lot of elevation gain. Not much shade -- a lot of sun.
Hiking to the the San Gabriel Peak is a Moderate/Advanced Hike. Although the trail is almost entirely uphill, it is well defined and easy to traverse. It is mostly all switchbacks until we meet up to a fire road (Mt. Disappointment Rd.) that will lead us to another trail head that will take us to the summit. In all, it is a 1,422 foot elevation gain.
There are plenty of spaces to stop along the way for periods of rests. Luckily, the majority of the trail is very shady to help stay cool. There are steep portions, but you'll be rewarded with amazing views as we traverse the north-east facing mountain looking upon the stretch of the San Gabriel mountain range.
So, Where Do We Begin?
Our goal is to meet at the RED BOX Parking area just off the highway on your right. Red Box is the name of the junction where the Angeles Crest Highway meets the Mt. Wilson-Red Box Road, and the Rincon-Red Box Road.
After we all arrive, we will carpool to the Bill Reily Trail Head, which is just 1/4 mile away down the road. We will be starting at 4,743 ft. above sea level.
Parking is limited, but there appears to be room to stack cars behind other hikers that are in our same group.
THE HIKE
We will be following a well-shaded trail through an oak forest. During the Fall of 2023, there was an inordinate amount of acorns. There were so many littering the trail, that it made it a bit more challenging to walk.
Please bring walking sticks to help traverse the maze of acorns :-).
The forest trail will take us up to Mount Disappointment Fire Road. We will have gained 949 feet when we meet the road at 5,692 ft. From here we will turn left onto the fire road and continue for about 0.2 miles where we will catch our second trail head that will take us to the summit San Gabriel Peak -- another 472 feet of elevation that will take us to 6,164 ft.
On our way to this trailhead, we will be passing the foundation of an old Nike missile site and a clear view of the Mt. Disappointment electronic site.
Once we reach the summit, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Mount Baldy as well as also looking upon the Mount Wilson Observatory. Not to mention, an expansive view of the San Gabriel valley.
At the summit we will find plenty of seating on a makeshift bench along with geocache box.
We will return the same way we came.

Laguna Mountains: Horse Heaven Campground
Description
Contrary to its name, Horse Heaven Group Campground has no equestrian sites. Instead, this tent-only facility can accommodate group gatherings. It provides a great mountain getaway for city dwellers to relax and enjoy cool summer temperatures, hiking and other outdoor recreation, just one hour east of San Diego.
This site offers three areas for group gatherings: Lupine Loop can accommodate 40 people and 10 vehicles; The facility is equipped with vault toilets and drinking water. A general store is located 2.3 miles away at Mt. Laguna and Pine Valley.
The campground sits at an elevation of 6,000 ft. in the Laguna Mountains. It is forested with pines and oaks that provide plenty of shade, in addition to a meadow. The area is home to many species of birds, as well as the endangered Laguna Skipper butterfly. Little Laguna lake is located just a short distance from the campground and is an excellent hiking destination for photographers and visitors looking to explore the area.
The Laguna Mountain Recreation Area is known for great horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking trails. Visitors can get their boots dusty on the Laguna Meadow Trail system or access a segment of the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from California to the State of Washington. Wildflowers are usually abundant in April and May on the Big Laguna Trail, which takes visitors past Big Laguna Lake. In wet years there is water in Big Laguna Lake by December or January and ducks and other birds can be found. The trail presents a number of options to the user. A return to the trailhead parking can be made by cutting through the Laguna Campground or by taking the Pacific Crest Trail north. Families can learn about the area's flora and fauna by attending educational programs at the facility's amphitheater. Or for history buffs, the El Prado Cabin located at nearby El Prado Campground, is the first ranger cabin built in the Cleveland National Forest in 1911. The San Diego State University Observatory also sponsors "Star Parties" for campers most Saturday evenings during the summer (schedule can be obtained at the nearby visitor center or by calling 619-473-8547).

June 28th-30th, 2024
Three days/two nights, June 28-30
Day 1: Friday, June 28
Day 2: Saturday, June 29
Day 3: Sunday, June 30
The seven bridges hike is a semi-established hiking path through several neighborhoods of urban San Diego. Banker Hill, Golden Hill, Hillcrest, Balboa, and North Park are all visited along the way. At each bridge I will provide a brief history and trivia about that feature. The hike allows for the observation of different architectural examples, urban gardenscapes, tucked away historical neighborhoods, and a pretty decent workout. At the end of the hike we will arrive at Great Maple restaurant where anyone who wishes would be welcome to stay for brunch following the hike. I will have a reservation for up to the full group.
Hike leader: KJ Archer
Date: June 30th, 2024 at 10am
Location: Start at Vermont St Bridge @ approx. 4071 Vermont St, San Diego, CA 92103
Parking: Residential street parking is available but expect it to be limited and include a small walk to the starting point. Alternatively, the Hub shopping center is located across the Vermont street bridge.
Length of hike: Due to various construction projects ongoing in the area the hike can vary between 5.5 and 6.2 miles. The exact length and path will be provided closer to the date of the hike so construction paths can be verified.
Fees: None except for optional brunch at the end of the hike
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Some steep hills and inclines and a few stairs but no technical terrain. Elevation gain roughly 350 feet. Nearly all paved asphalt/concrete. The Spruce Street Suspension bridge does sway a noticeable amount. People with unstable gait or fear of heights should be aware of this.

The hike up to the lookout tower through the San Jacinto Wilderness offers some of the most beautiful vistas in Southern California, including the Salton Sea to the southeast. The origin of Tahquitz's name is derived from the Cahuilla people's god Tahquish, who believe the peak to be the god's home.
At an elevation of 8,846 feet, this lookout is the highest within the San Bernardino National Forest, and the only one located within a designated Wilderness area. It is also the forest’s longest continuously operated station, serving some 77 years. (information from the USFS)

USFS volunteer willing, we may have the opportunity to visit the opened fire station at the peak.
We will meet at the Denny's parking lot on the corner of Hwy 111 and Date Palm Dr in Cathedral City and drive to the Forest Service office in Idyllwild for a permit then on to Humber Park. An Adventure Pass or an Interagency Pass (one per car) is required for this location. We will go clockwise on this loop trail starting from the bottom parking lot and hike up the road towards the visitor’s center (High Tide is 10:29 AM and Low Tide is 2:40 PM). Expect anywhere from 500 to 2000 beach goers. This relatively flat hike/walk from the Torrey Pines parking lot is the same distance to the gay beach (1.5 miles) as it is from Torrey Pines Glide port. He will be joining us for most the hikes. He has lived in the area his entire life and has hiked extensively in the park. Some hikes may require reservations; the trip leader will take care of those.
You will need your usual 10 essentials for day hikes (Click Here). Altitude will not be a problem. Be prepared for possible mosquitoes and rain. Bring tick repellent and tick removal tweezers.
We will arrive August 21st and depart on August 28th. The trip is limited to 12 attendees including the trip leader. $40 covers logistics and the tea party.

Mount Piños is located in the Los Padres National Forest on the boundary between Ventura and Kern Counties, California. This mountain top location has rugged rock formations and a feeling of being quite remote.

Bears may frequent the area and all food must be kept in approved containers or locked inside your vehicle.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area:
The Crown Jewel of Minnesota
Sunday Sept 8 - Friday Sept 13, 2024
Trip Description: Join us for this once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the crown jewel of Minnesota nature, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Located in northern Minnesota on the Canadian border, this area is famous for its pristine lakes, singing loons and great fishing. This trip will be a backpacking canoe trip, meaning every participant will work in community with others on the trip to share responsibilities like cooking, building fires, switching off paddling, and securing food supplies overnight. Trips to the BWCA are considered a right of passage in Minnesota culture, and I am excited to share this experience with you!
Note: Flights to/from MSP Airport are not included. Our backpacking trip will start at the entry point the night before Sept 8th, including staying in the bunkhouse, and departing on Sept 9th until exiting the BWCA on Sept 13th. Plan an extra day on both ends for air travel to/from MSP Airport.
Route Overview: Starting on Saganaga Lake we will travel north and after two days or so of paddling, around the time you start to miss portaging we will turn around to return to Saganaga Lake. Red line indicates 30-mile route. We will have one base camp day at the halfway points of the trip, averaging 7-8mi/day traveling to and from.
Distance: ~30miles
Route Type: Loop
Sunday, Sept 8th
Arrive to MSP, drive to Seagull Outfitters (5hrs). Overnight stay in the bunkhouse included with registration costs. Equipment check.
Monday, Sept 9th
Depart from entry location, Point #55 Saganaga Lake. Paddle for day, no portages.
Tuesday, Sept 10th
Continue along route through 6 portages until stay at Amoeber Lake to find camp.
Wednesday, Sept 11th
Day trip to islands and lakes. Enjoy camp or fishing.
Thursday, Sept 12th
Canoe/portage to campsite #3, including 10 portages.
Friday, Sept 20th
Depart for Exit #55 Saganaga Lake, no portaging. 5-hour drive back to Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
The below map depicts our route and campsites available for use (colored dots). We will camp at the nearest available campsite in relation to our resting locations (numbered below).
Cost: See per person registration type. This includes canoe rentals, permits, and Bunk House accommodations the night before, if available. Flights not included. Food and Travel (car ride north) coordination is recommended with the Trip Leader.
Cancellation/Refund: Refunds are available until Aug 1st, 2024. Unless an alternate attendee is confirmed, a refund will not be provided after 8/1/2024.
Travel: Coordination with the Trip Leader is encouraged. Flights are not included, but an early arrival Tuesday is recommended for the drive up to BWCA. You are responsible for your travel to Seagull Outfitters, but Trip Leader assistance is available. Direct flights from San Diego to MSP are available through Sun Country and Delta Airlines. It is a 5hour drive from the airport to the BWCA, so early arrival is critical.
Experience: This trip does not require previous canoe/portage experience, and is considered an intermediate route due to the number of portages and one (1) base camp day included in the schedule. If you have never portaged or paddled, please let the Trip Leader know and they will be more than happy to explain skill requirements. We will be teaching these skills day 1 and on as well!
Weather: These mid-summer temperatures are high 50s to high 70s. Of course, mid-August is warmer than early July, and you can expect a bump in humidity as the summer progresses. August averages about 8 days of rain, so bring rain gear. This is the end of the mosquito season, meaning mosquitos will be waning but this is always location dependent in the BWCA.
Bring: 10 Essentials (no kidding, every person needs a personal first aid kit); water filtration; food for each meal plus extra snacks; water bottle and filter system; sleeping bag and pad; tent; appropriate footwear (land and water); layered clothing; jacket; rain gear; wide hat; compass; toilet paper & trowel; jet boil/compact camping stove; fire starter; headlamp; sunglasses; sunscreen; insect repellant; camera and entertainment (book, card game, etc).
Note: Some communal equipment will be utilized, like jet boils/stove and Duluth packs to reduce duplicative equipment being carried.
Other Considerations: As with any backcountry experience, this one is "Leave no Trace" - our trash comes out with us. Active bear area - mandatory use of either bear cannisters or hanging food sacks.

Mt Hood Timberline Trail Backpack
Sept 14 – 17, 2024
Contact Trip Leader: Larry Purtle: E-Mail: lvpurtle@hotmail.com Mobile: 562-485-7149
Timberline Trail, USFS Trail #600
The Timberline Trail is a National Historic Trail in the Mount Hood Wilderness that was constructed primarily by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s at the same time as the Timberline Lodge. It follows near the tree line and circumnavigates Mt. Hood with vistas, waterfalls, alpine meadows and west side Cascade forests.
Our plan is to start and end the 4-day, 3-night hike at the historic Timberline Lodge on the south flank. Each day covers about 10 miles. It is rated as difficult but reviews indicate various skill levels complete it with no problems. There are detours required for blown down trees, mostly on day 2 before Bald Mountain. There are multiple glacial river crossings. Seasonal conditions should be fairly dry but conditions are variable.
Day 1 will start at 8am from Timberline Lodge and follow west along the PCT to Ramona Falls near the Sandy River ravine on the western flank of Mt Hood. This day will require crossing the Zigzag and the Sandy rivers.
Day 2 From Ramona Falls we will continue west on the Ramona Falls Trail and then North on the PCT as a bypass of the original route along Yokum Ridge to Muddy Fork made difficult by blown down trees (2020 Labor Day storm). We’ll leave the PCT at Bald Mountain to rejoin the original Timberline Trail and head NE. We will cross the Muddy Fork, McGee, Glisan and Ladd Creeks. The day ends on the north flank at either Wyeast Basin Meadow or Elk Grove Camp.
Day 3 reaches the highest point, 7330 ft on the Copper Spur, on the eastern flank. The day starts with a crossing of the Coe Branch creek, and later crossing the Compass Branch, Elliot and Newton creeks. The route continues past the Cloud Cap ski area turning South to Gnarl Ridge, and we’ll spend the third night after crossing Newton creek.
Day 4 takes us back to Timberline Lodge, passing through the Mount Hood Meadows ski area, and climbing through the White River Glacier ravine. The main river crossings are Clark Creek and the White river.

LA – GeoTours Morocco
Great Outdoors LA invites you to Morocco from Nov. 22 to Dec. 2, 2024. This trip is being organized and sponsored though GeoTours, which is an LGBTQ-friendly company that organizes regular tours to places all over the world at very reasonable prices compared to other tour companies. Although not sponsored by Great Outdoors, this is an exclusive GOLA invitation that will be led by our long-time GO member and hike leader Joe Holliday, along with GeoTours. Click here for the trip itinerary and details: https://www.geotours.us/tour/morocco-2024/. Registration closes May 1, 2024.
Why Morrocco? Although it's a favorite destination for Europeans, many Americans feel unsafe traveling in Arab countries. However, Morocco is considered one of the safest Arab countries in which LGBTQ groups can travel, and it has some of the best scenery and tourism of any region in northern Africa. Therefore, we are inviting this group of travelers to a wonderful place where they may not feel comfortable going individually but can have an “opportunity to learn about life in a different country through immersion into the culture. Seeing something from the outside versus experiencing it from the inside provides two completely different insights into a way of life.” -- Gay Travel in Morocco: An Overview (journeybeyondtravel.com).
Personal Considerations: While several LGBTQ groups visit Morocco every year with no problems, all participants will need to understand and acknowledge the following cultural note to ensure the group's safety:
It’s important to note that in Morocco homosexual acts are illegal and punishable by prison. Even though this is not always enforced, it’s smart to use street sense and avoid public displays of affection, as this is culturally frowned upon for both opposite and same-sex couples. As in any country, we ask our travelers to respect local customs (hats off in mosques, no kissing in public, etc) and most people will not be hostile. Transgender travelers should be especially aware of potentially abusive behavior, particularly to transgender women, due a lack of education in the country and conservative Muslim values. Please review and consider the additional information provided prior to deciding whether to participate or not:

We plan to donate to local LGBTQ groups in Morocco to help the country's progress toward more equality.
This is the first of what we hope will be several trips around the world (Iceland, New Zealand, Peru, etc.).

BICYCLE CAMPING NOTES
_____________________________________
WILLIAM HEISE REGIONAL PARK, SAN DIEGO COUNTY
Ample bicycling opportunities exist in this regional park located a half-dozen miles from the unincorporated Julian community (famous for its pies). It includes more than 12 miles of multi-use non-motorized trails. Situated 4,200 feet above sea level in a forest of pines and oaks along the northern extremity of the Cuyamaca Mountain Range. The day-use and camping park spans over 1,000 acres. Camping trip bicycle use is recommended.
BORREGO SPRINGS CAMPING
An active bicycling community exists in the Borrego Springs community. Smack in the middle of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and unpretentious, the town of Borrego Springs, population 3,429. is the only California town that is completely surrounded by a state park. It’s also an official International Dark Sky Community—the first and only one in California—dedicated to protecting the night sky from light pollution
The downtown area has a passel of ice cream shops, restaurants, and lodgings, but the local art scene evokes the most community pride. First, there are the supersize prehistoric and fantastical beasts that both line area roads and are sometimes seemingly dropped randomly in the middle of nowhere, far from any road or foot traffic. The meticulously crafted metal creatures, rust-colored and featuring such details as curling eyelashes and “fur” of shaved iron, are the work of metal sculptor Ricardo Breceda. Visitors to Borrego Springs who would like to camp have it especially good—you are allowed to camp for free anywhere in the surrounding Anza-Borrego State Park.
The lightly traveled roads, including the 9 mile route from town to park, are all Bicycle friendly. Expect to encounter bicycling families and riding groups on the excellently maintained paths. Camping trip bicycle use is recommended.
HURKEY CREEK HIGHWAY 74 CAMPING
Last year Hurkey Creek proved excellent for bicycling. In addition to extensive paved roads within the park, there’s also a specially designated paved hiking/walking path.
Adjacent to the park’s Highway 74 entrance is the paved Apple Canyon Road which is an excellent lightly-traveled eBike gradual climb leading to the Zen Center. Camping trip bicycle use is recommended.
GUAJOME REGIONAL PARK, OCEANSIDE, SAN DIEGO COUNTY
Guajome Regional Park Camping Is recommended for bicycling. It has numerous paved roadways within the park suitable for bicycling. There is also an excellent 10 mile bike path from the park into Oceanside. The trail there merges with the waterfront road leading to many shops and restaurants. And the area adjacent to the park includes signed bikeways. The bike paths and routes are all considered good quality and recommended..
Guajome Regional Park’s brochure states there are approximately 3.5 miles of well-maintained trails that meander through diverse Southern California habitats such as woodlands, chaparral, wetlands, and mixed grasslands. There are eight named trails, including a short self guided nature trail, and a couple of unnamed trails. Camping trip bicycle use is recommended.
SWEETWATER RESERVOIR SAN DIEGO AREA
Bicycles are recommended for the several shared roads provide ample opportunity for cycling exercise.
The park entrance is adjacent to the county’s Bonita and Chula Vista communities and the multitude of excellent bicycle paths within the greater San Diego city communities. The San Diego area is nationally recognized as one of the premier bicycling areas. The county website has an entire information section that includes bicycling maps, interactive route planning guides, and much more. The 10 mile outing to the distant waterfront and oceanside are all on available bike paths. Camping trip bicycle use is recommended.
IDYLLWILD REGIONAL COUNTY PARK CAMPING
This Riverside County Idyllwild regional camping park has a single entrance/exit road devoid of vehicle traffic. It provides bicyclists a route into the adjacent unincorporated Idyllwild downtown community. Restaurants, shopping options and tourist attractions exist. The area’s hilly terrain limits other bicycle opportunities. State Highway 256 runs through the town and bicycle road-warrior use of the two-lane road is not uncommon.
Camping trip bicycle use is recommended.
MECCA CAMPING
Fronting on heavily traveled, and sometimes dangerous State Highway 111, this Salton Sea area state park is rather small with no bicycle paths. Without bicycle options it is NOT recommended. Camping bicycle use is NOT recommended.
