Abalone and Sacred Coves Day Hike

Abalone Cove Shoreline Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove), tidepools, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site. Dogs are prohibited on the beach; however, on-leash dogs are permitted in the upper picnic area and on designated trails.

This can be a short easy hike, or a longer moderate hike, depending on participants ability and interest. The easy version includes Abalone Cove, and is just over  a mile. The moderate version is about 7-8 miles and includes Sacred Cove and Del Cerro Park via Palos Verdes North Drive and the Burma Road with a 1,200 foot gain/loss.

Parking Lot Entry Way opened 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. ONLY Abalone Cove Beach

There are an abundant amount of trails covering Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, whether you want to hike down to the beach below, or enjoy the views from high above on the bluffs. Please refer to the trail map below for more information.

 

The parking lot is located at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 9027. Parking Rates and Admission Fees are as follows: First 30 Minutes FREE; 30 Minutes to 2 hours $6; Over 2 Hours $12; Buses $55; Seniors 62+ and and handicapped are FREE year-round.

Features are: Beach, Drinking Fountain, Hiking Trails, Lifeguards (summer hours &weekends only), Paid Parking. Picnic Areas. Restrooms and Tidepools.

For this trip, hiking boots are recommended. You will also need to carry two ro three liters of water. Click here to get your ten essentials you will need for the hike.There is no fee for this hike.

Bring: Face mask lunch/snacks, sun protection, layered clothing, hiking poles may be helpful. Carry Emergency Contact Information.

Carpooling is not recommended except for members of same household. You are responsible for arranging you own transportation. Arrive a few minutes early for briefing.

  1. I will follow Federal, State and local COVID guidelines as well as the directions of the leader.

  2. I will maintain social distance (min. 6') and wear a face mask if social distancing is not possible

  3. I will not attend if feeling ill or have any symptoms of COVID.

  4. I will contact trip leader if I test positive for COVID within 14 days of the event
