Howdy Great Outdoors Partners’

Registration for this event is now closed.

Stage II fire restrictions are still in effect.  That means no campfires, even in developed recreation sites. Visitors with a valid California Campfire permit may use a portable stove or lantern using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel. Inyo National Forest has prohibited any open flame. This means no campfires with either wood or pit propane. Please leave your campfire in a can at home (we confirmed this with the Inyo Forest Section Chief). Portable stoves for cooking or for making coffee using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are okay.

Finally, a use for our bandanas aside from masks!  Break out your boots, belt buckles and western gear, we are going to be in Lone Pine during the Western Film Festival!

We have reserved nearly every campsite for tents and Trailers/RV’s at the Lone Pine Campground in Inyo National Forest, 6.5 miles west of Lone Pine near the base of Mt. Whitney. And we have five RV full hookups sites on hold at nearby Boulder Creek RV Park just south of Lone Pine. Call Boulder Creek RV Park, 760-876-4243 and ask to reserve one of the Great Outdoors Palm Springs sites. When you get a site reserved return here and register using the "Reserved own site..."  $10 category.  Coordinate with Scott

Nestled between two creeks and just off Mt. Whitney Portal Road is the Lone Pine Campground in the Inyo National Forest. This is the perfect spot for our long weekend of activities and very convenient to town, movie venues and showers.

In addition to the all-weekend Western Film Festival sponsored by the Museum of Western Film History, optional excursions to: Manzanar (the Japanese American WWII Detention Camp just north of Lone Pine (bring your bicycle the place is huge), the “Movie Road” (follows where Sci-Fi and Westerns were filmed in the Alabama Hills), the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, bass fishing and of course hiking the numerous trails on and around Mt. Whitney including Cottonwood Lakes.

With all the available activity this will be a mostly unscripted campout apart from our customary opening Meet & Greet Tea 5 pm Friday at Lone Pine campground site TBA. Check whiteboard for additional / updated activities. We can help facilitate any group wishing to do a similar activity together.

  • At the Lone Pine Campground some of us will have to use overflow parking which is within the campsite about 100 yards from the campsite loop. Note: your RV and any tow vehicle must fit on the site; otherwise overflow parking must be used.
  • Several of the Lone Pine campsites still have the original 1940’s US Forest Service small ovens built of steel and stone. If you think you will want to use one to make popovers or oven items, we suggest you bring charcoal for the heat.
  • Day fishing licenses are available at Lone Pine Sporting Goods 220 S Main Street for about $17/day. Basically, it’s bass fishing in October. The store owners can let you know where to go fishing.
  • If you plan to attend the Western Film Festival either for individual films, Movie Road trips, or purchase an entire weekend pass to all activities, these tickets will go on sale shortly after July 4.  You will want to act on this soon. The link to the site:
  • All the Lone Pine campsites have the similar amenities as those pictured: fire ring, picnic table, bear boxes. Some have short access to Lone Pine creek. There is running potable water from faucets around the campground and vault toilets. No hookups - dry camping. When you back in, most sites have 3 to 5 feet of overhang which will provide more space in front of your RV. See photo below:
  • As we get closer to the event, we will follow-up with our suggested restaurant picks in town, grocery store shower location and additional detail.
