PS - Hike: Willis Palms

Hike along the San Andreas Fault to a lush palm oasis featuring views of the Coachella Valley, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio mountains, and a walk through an extensive Washingtonia Filifera Palm grove.  The Willis Palms Trail is part of the Coachella Valley Preserve located 10 miles east of Palm Springs in the bluffs and mesas of the Indio Hills.

The trailhead is located on Thousand Palms Canyon Road a short distance from the intersection of Ramon and Thousand Palms Canyon Rd, on the left (west side). 

  • Meet-up promptly at 8:15 AM, Smoketree Commons, 111 and Farrell.  Park middle of lot between Walgreens and Petco.
  • Check-in with leader and quick briefing with departure by 8:30 AM.
  • Carpooling is encouraged and may be available if offered by driver.  You are responsible for arranging your own transportation or ride share.  Contributions to driver costs welcome.  Limited parking at trailhead or alongside roadway. 
  • Trail features: Out and back loop, 3 miles length, 2 hrs. duration, elevation gain/loss 300 ft., mostly full sun exposure.  
  • Terrain: rocky, sandy areas, portion of trail narrow with steep drop-off on one side.
  • Difficulty Rating: Moderate
  • Sorry no pets allowed in the Preserve.
  • Please advise leader of any medical concerns or physical limitations.
  • BringTen Essentials (click here), water (1 to 2 liters recommended), trail snacks.
  • Sun protection and layered clothing are recommended. 
  • Sturdy hiking footwear with good tread and adequate drinking water are required.
  • Carry Emergency Contact Information (ICE).
