Please join us on Sunday December 18, 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM for a scenic and educational walk/hike to include Cabrillo Beach shore, rocky shoreline and sea cliffs, tide pools, Korean Peace Bell Park and optional visit to the Cabrillo Aquarium at the end of our tour.
The walk/hike offers stunning scenic views and is good for beginning to moderate skill levels. The route is a mixture of paved sidewalks with some dirt terrain and the ocean trail leads down to the rocky beach, so make sure to wear sturdy walking/hiking shoes.
We will start with an easy stroll along and past Cabrillo Beach shoreline. We will proceed to the adjacent tide pools (at low tide) and then walk along the rocky seaside for about ¼ mile to get to the famous sea cliff site of Sunken City (known for its landslide-ruined road and brilliant artwork/graffiti on the broken rocks and road. From there we will walk and have a talk at the Point Fermin Park with its 100-year-old trees, location of many movies, and historic lighthouse. Next, we'll walk up the hill to the grand Korean Peace Bell with its great ocean overlook and get more information about the history of this cultural monument as well as its contrasting WWII gun emplacements. From there we walk back to the Cabrillo Aquarium (around 2pm) and have the option for an oceanography professor-led visit to the Cabrillo Aquarium (optional $5 contribution). (Note: another option before or after group activity is to do a long walk along the shore in either direction from the aquarium).
