SD - Introductory EDI Topics

Online Presentation

Wednesday April 3rd, 6:30-7:30pm via Zoom

We are excited to offer a first ever introductory presentation for GO Members on assorted Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) topics. Please note that the field of EDI continues to change rapidly, and this discussion will create a safe space for such difficult discussions. Whether you are new to EDI or an inclusion champion, your presence is gladly welcomed! This will be a 60 minute values-based presentation and discussion to better understand folx from all backgrounds and chapters.

Topics to be included are:

1. Identity: To begin our conversation, we will begin with the many aspects of identity that encompass our experiences. From age to sexual orientation and ability level to race and gender identity, we will talk through how these different identities shape our understanding of the world. Specifically we will discuss how generational differences between chapters impact our worldviews and the importance of grounding ourselves in GO's historical context. From creating safe spaces for queer folx to our historic persecution throughout the 1900's, even today we as a community continue to face challenges in today's America.

2. Language: Next, we will discuss how the use of language is ever important in today's world, focusing on the specific example of Pronoun use. As our vernacular evolves over time, we've seen phrases like "gay is a lifestyle" and "preferred pronouns" become outdated and harmful to queer communities - and this is a space to discuss language without fear of retribution within this safe space. Similarly, we've also seen the term "queer" be reclaimed by our community and the use of the word varies based on each of our lived experience. We will discuss how the language we use can create a culture of inclusivity - and how to acknowledge and address when harmful language is used to meaningful correct course without derailing the conversation.

3. Allyship: Lastly, a majority of our time will be spent discussing Allyship and its importance in our community. Without allyship we would be without Anti-Hate Crime Legislation and Marriage Equality, and here we will recognize opportunities to become allies ourselves. We will discuss local and recent examples from GO Leadership, including our recent addition of Pronouns to the GO website!

This discussion will be held online using Zoom.
