Horsethief Creek via Cactus Springs 

  • Distance: 5 miles out & back
  • Elevation gain: 1200'
  • Trailhead elevation: 4045'
  • Difficulty Rating: Moderate/ Advanced
  • Hike is downhill in and uphill out. Of the 1200 feet, 300 feet is gained going in, and 865 feet on the way back.
  • Hiking time: 3 hours

  • Description: Set in the transitional zone between the Santa Rosa Mountains and the Coachella Valley, this hike provides a huge variety of scenery, including geology, canyons, creeks and desert flora. Adding to the appeal is the area’s historical interest; Horsethief Creek takes its name from the legend of gangsters that supposedly used the canyon as a hideout.

Bring Ten Essentials (click here), water (2 to 3 liters recommended), lunch and trail snacks. Sun protection and layered clothing are recommended. Carry Emergency Contact Information (ICE). Sturdy hiking footwear with good tread and adequate drinking water are required. Hiking poles may be helpful.

Carpooling is encouraged and may be available if offered by driver. You are responsible for arranging you own transportation or ride share. Arrive a few minutes early for briefing and carpooling.
