Our guest speaker for the September 2019 Great Outdoors Palm Springs Speaker Series will be long time GO member Glenn Morrison. Glenn will be giving a talk on Ham Radio in Emergencies.   Being a Ham would be useful, not only at a local disaster, but would be helpful if you are broken down or someone is injured out in the boondocks where there is no cell service. There will be a slide show, some show-and-tell and practical demonstrations of Ham equipment.

Glenn (call letters WB6RLC ... Whiskey Bravo Six Roger Loves Charley) has been a Ham Radio operator since he was 18 years old. He currently is president of the Desert RATS Amateur Radio Club of the greater Palm Springs area. He is also president of the FOD ARC - The Friends Of Dorothy Amateur Radio Club. Yep, we even have our own Ham Radio club. Glenn first joined GO in about 1980 and was active in the Orange County Chapter before moving full time to the Coachella Valley 10 years ago.

What's the Appeal of Ham Radio?

You can communicate from the top of a mountain, your home or behind the wheel of your car, all without relying on the Internet or a cell phone network. You can take radio wherever you go! In times of disaster, when regular communications channels fail, Hams can swing into action assisting emergency communications efforts and working with public service agencies. For instance, the Amateur Radio Service kept New York City agencies in touch with each other after their command center was destroyed during the 9/11 tragedy. Ham radio also came to the rescue during Hurricane Katrina, where all other communications failed, and the devastating flooding in Colorado in 2013.

You can communicate with other hams using your voice and a microphone, interface a radio with your computer or tablet to send data, text or images, or Morse code, which remains incredibly popular. You can even talk to astronauts aboard the International Space Station, talk to other hams through one of several satellites in space, or bounce signals off the moon and back to Earth!

All members and non-members are welcome to attend all meetings. There is no charge for this event. Space is limited to 40 persons. Please click on the "Register" button to let us know you plan on attending this meeting.
