This hike is cancelled and rescheduled for Monday May 16

The Devil’s Slide Trail to Saddle Junction is a 5 mile, out and back trail through one of the most beautiful sections of the San Jacinto Wilderness.  With spectacular views of Marion Mountain and Suicide and Lily rock, this uphill, 2.5 mile trail to Saddle Junction is well worth the climbing effort.  Depending on the desire of the group, there will be an optional 1.9 mile loop at the top of Saddle Junction where the PCT meet trails to Tahquitz Peak and the Caramba Overlook.  Plan on lunch at Saddle Junction where the trails meet.  As this is a very popular trail, a hiking permit is required.  Group size is limited to 12 people.  If there are sufficient hikers on the wait list, an effort will be made to go as two groups 20 minutes apart to keep within the permit limitations.  Trailhead parking will require either an Adventure Pass or a valid Interagency pass (e.g., National Park Senior Pass); one for each vehicle.

  • Trail Length:  5 miles with an optional 1.9 mile loop from Saddle Junction which will be added by group agreement.
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: 1,840 feet starting at 6,400 feet in elevation and hiking up to 8,200 feet).
  • Difficulty Rating: moderate+
  • Trail Type: Out and back with a 1.9 mile optional loop.  As there may still be snow on the trail, wear hiking boots/shoes with good traction as the trail may be slippery in some sections.
  • Hiking Time:  3-5 hours
  • Departure Time:  7:30 AM (Please arrive early for 7:30 am departure)
  • Driving Time:  approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes (approximately 50 miles from Denny’s to the trailhead).
  • Departure Location:  The Denny’s parking lot at 69050 CA-111, Cathedral City, CA   92234 across from the new Agua Caliente Casino in Cathedral City.  Map click here
  • Fees/Charges:  Either an Adventure Pass ($5/day) or an Interagency Pass for each vehicle parking at the trailhead.  I am hoping there will be sufficient people with passes to cover vehicles going in.
