5 Peak Challenge Series

Part 1 - Mission Trails - Cowles/Pyles Peaks


This hike begins from Big Rock Park and enters into Mission Trails Regional Park. The Big Rock Trail heads uphill to the Cowles Service Road, you will follow this to the summit of Cowles Mountain. From the top, there are awesome views of the San Diego area. Wildflowers grow alongside the trail during the early summer months. The hike to Cowles and Pyles Peaks is an 8 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near La Mesa, California that features great views and is considered a moderate to challenging hike. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

NoteThis hike will be the first in our New Years 5-Peak Challenge series in which we will hike all 5 of the peaks in Mission Hills Regional Park over the course of 3 months. Any member who completes all 5 peaks (3 hikes) will receive a patch from VPO KJ.

    Bring: Ten Essentials, water (2 to 3 liters recommended), lunch/ snacks, sun protection, layered clothing, hiking poles may be helpful. Carry Emergency Contact Information. Sturdy hiking footwear with good tread and adequate drinking water are required.
