Ready for an Unforgettable Escape? Come join your GO friends to Southern Utah!       -Updated ticket costs-

Tired of the daily grind? Then it’s time to trade traffic for towering trees and spreadsheets for starry skies! Join your Great Outdoors friends on a five-day, four-night camping adventure in the breathtaking landscapes of Southern Utah!

We’ll be setting up camp at Duck Creek Campground, a peaceful hideaway nestled in the Dixie National Forest near Cedar City—just 450 miles east of LA. You’ll be surrounded by groves of aspen and Douglas fir, with ancient ponderosa pines (some over 500 years old!) standing tall all around you.

There are hiking trails right from camp,Duck Creek Pond and Navajo lake nearby if you feel like casting a line, renting a boat or just kicking back. One day, we’ll hit the trails at Cedar Breaks National Monument—a jaw-dropping natural amphitheater—on a scenic hike along the South Rim Trail (note: there’s a $15–$25 fee per vehicle to enter). We’ll also explore the Mammoth Lava Caves, a wild formation from Utah’s volcanic past.

And if that’s not enough? Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks are just about an hour away. If you forget something or need supplies, Duck Creek Village is just down the road with shops, firewood, and a few local eats.

So….Let’s get outside, breathe in that mountain air, and make some memories!

Campground amenities include flush toilets, fire rings, picnic tables and potable water.

Easy Evening Walk at Fairview & Talbert Parks in Costa Mesa

    Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 5:00 PM

Please join us a repeat of an EASY 4-mile EVENING walk in Costa Mesa!

This walk was suggested by longtime GO members and Costa Mesa residents Tod and Craig Beckett-Frank.

Fairview Park is the City’s largest park, hosting 195 acres of open space – natural area, and 13 acres of manicured landscape for a total of 208 acres. Within the 195 acres of open space there are two Nationally Registered Cultural Resource Historic Sites and five distinct habitat ecosystems which are home to many rare and endangered plant and animal species.

Talbert Regional Park is located North and South of Victoria Street in Costa Mesa between Pacific Avenue and the Santa Ana River. North Talbert consists of 91.5 acres and South Talbert is approximately 88.5 acres.

The park is divided into six separate plant groups, identified as "zones" and based upon the progression of plant groups and changing conditions found along the Santa Ana River. The first zone is designated "Intensive Use Area" and the plant material has been selected based on use instead of its origins on the site. The second zone, a "Border Planting" zone is planted with vegetation designed to maintain boundaries and screen the embankment of the Greenville-Banning Channel.

Another zone, the "Coastal Strand" consists of gentle slopes and dunes, a habitat largely destroyed by the advance of civilization in the area. The "Native Grassland" zone is the largest zone in the park and provides opportunities for wildlife habitats. An "Alluvial Woodland" zone contains a wide variety of plant and animal life and is the most secluded area in the park. Finally, the "Wetland Zone" consists of the southern 14.8 acres of the park and contains elements of riparian woodland and mulefat scrub.

Let's meet at 5:00 PM at the end of the parking lot (near the restrooms)

    Bring

    Water,  sunscreen and hat.

    Optional

If anyone is interested, we can have dinner at Avila's El Ranchito after the walk.  I estimate that we will burn about 626 calories on the hike which should almost cover two tacos and a light beer!

      Summertime Afternoon

      Long Beach Water Taxi

      to Shoreline Village

      FRIDAY

      August 28, 2026, 1:30 pm-6:00 pm

Cruise Long Beach’s scenic harbor aboard the AquaLink boats from Alamitos Bay Landing to Aquarium Dock 4 for a cool afternoon adventure.  Departing at 2:00 pm, the AquaLink boat provides a relaxing 30-minute ride between Alamitos Bay Landing and downtown Long Beach’s Shoreline Village with food and drink service available all for $5 per ride one-way.

After departing from the AquaLink boat near the aquarium, we will walk to the Golden Shore Marine Biological Reserve Park about one half mile away for a view of a local natural area.

A short note about the GSMBRP:

This site is south of the original shoreline of Long Beach on an area accreted from sediment washed down the Los Angeles River and deposited at it mouth after the mouth of the river was channelized and the mouth repositioned in 1921.

Originally beach area and part of Palm Beach Park, the shoreline was stabilized with rock, and a boat launching ramp and parking lot created in the early 1950s. Continued silt build up closed the launch ramp in the early 1990s.

In 1997, construction began to convert the launch ramp and parking lot into 6.4 acres of intertidal and sub tidal wetlands habitat as mitigation for the conversion of 20 acres of Shoreline Park into the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Rainbow Harbor commercial/recreation attraction.

The Golden Shore Marine Biological Reserve was specifically mitigation for the impact on the salt-water lagoon that was converted to Rainbow Harbor recreational boating area.

The mitigation was necessary because Shoreline Park had been developed with funding from the Land & Water Conservation Fund. Interpretative signage and viewing scopes were added in 2008 with a California State San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy grant.

On the return walk we can stop at Parker’s Light House restaurant for happy hour on the harbor across from the Queen Mary.  Food and drink purchases are optional and paid by member.

In addition, Shoreline Village offers a wide selection of other waterfront restaurants and shops for beach wear, casual clothing, sunglasses, shoes and sandals, and home decor.

The return ride aboard the AquaLink (another $5) leaves from Aquarium Dock 4 at 5:00 pm and arrives back at Alamitos Bay Landing about 6:00 pm after a quick stop at the Queen Mary.

Free parking is available in the designated long-term area at Alamitos Bay Landing near the Ballast Point restaurant. AquaLink boarding begins 15 minutes prior to the departure time.

Boarding is on a first come, first serve basis and boats often meet full capacity, so please come early to be in line to ensure your place.

      Reminder: Fare is $5 each-way.

Grunion Run at Bolsa Chica State Beach

      Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 10:30 PM

Grunion are small, silvery marine fish that come completely out of the water to spawn on the sand during the high tides after the new and full moon.

These fish are only found along the Southern California and Baja California coastlines; therefore, witnessing them “dancing” on the sand is truly a California experience. Unfortunately, since the highest tides usually occur after beach curfews, it is very hard to watch this natural phenomenon on your own.

Bolsa Chica State Beach offers a guided program that allows registered participants to safely park and watch the grunion run. State park staff will give visitors a short, educational program on the grunion before heading out on the sand to observe the fascinating mating ritual of these fish and enjoy s’mores by a complementary bonfire.

The Grunion Run takes place at Bolsa Chica State Beach during the hours of 10:30pm-12:30am.

You will be emailed instructions the week of the event on how to access the park and meet up for the guided experience.

The Great Outdoors LA Chapter did a Grunion Run event all the way back in July of 1995!  I was there!  This is a link to the original event flyer:

      1995 Grunion Run Flyer

REMINDER: During the open season, a California fishing license is required for persons 16 years and older. Grunion may be taken by hand only. No holes may be dug in the beach to entrap them. The daily bag and possession limit for grunion is 30 fish.

If you have any questions about this event, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Event Leader.

Join us for a relaxing getaway to one of California's most spectacular coastal campgrounds!

Nestled along the rugged shoreline about an hour west of Santa Barbara, Jalama Beach offers a rare opportunity to unplug, unwind, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Central Coast. Early September is one of the best times to visit. The summer crowds have begun to thin, while the days remain warm and sunny with cool, comfortable evenings perfect for gathering around a campfire. Wake up to the sound of crashing waves, take a leisurely stroll along miles of sandy beach, search for shells and driftwood, or simply sit back and watch pelicans, dolphins, and perhaps even migrating whales offshore.

No visit to Jalama is complete without trying the legendary Jalama Burger at the campground's beachfront store and grill—a favorite among campers and day visitors alike. The camp store also carries groceries, camping essentials, ice, firewood, and other necessities, making it easy to settle in and enjoy your stay. Evenings are magical at Jalama. As the sun sinks into the Pacific, the sky often explodes into brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple before giving way to a canopy of stars rarely seen from the city. It's the perfect setting for happy hour, shared meals, campfire stories, and great conversation with your Great Outdoor friends old and new. Whether you're looking for peaceful solitude, outdoor adventure, or simply a weekend of good company in an unforgettable setting, Jalama Beach is the perfect destination. Pack your camping gear, bring your favorite beach chair, and come enjoy one of California's hidden coastal treasures with us!

      Baja Mexico 3-Day Coastal Expedition

      Boating, Snorkeling, Hiking, Beach Time

      SEPT 11-13, 2026

Wild and Rugged Coasts of Baja, Mexico, Starting and ending in Tecate, CA, USA

Join three local scientists for a deep dive into the coastal habitats of the spectacular Punta Banda Peninsula just three hours south of the border. Environmental Scientist Francisco Castro, Geographer Gerry Chavez and Anthropologist Mike Wilken will lead you on a fun and educational adventure on both land and by sea, where you will:

      • Learn first-hand about the many marine mammals, birds and other organisms that make their homes in our coastal ecosystems as we cruise in small, private “panga” boats along rocky shorelines and islands, including snorkeling (optional), hikes to pristine tidepools and walks and easy swimming at a beautiful sandy beach and estuary.

      • Find out how spectacular cliffs, rocky and sandy coastlines show us the ancient processes that formed the land, with the help of tectonic action and the great Pacific Ocean, eventually forming the Punta Banda estuary.

      • Hike through the rare and endangered succulent coastal scrub landscapes and learn about plants and animals that have evolved and adapted to the arid coastal climate over thousands of years, supporting ancient populations who were the original human inhabitants of these lands.

      • Stay in a vacation beach house on the sandy bay strand, with time for easy ocean swimming, beach walking or just relaxing on the sand.

This three day trip begins in Tecate, USA, where you will meet your guide and cross the border into Tecate, Mexico. From there you will travel about three hours by van to our beach house (home base) in Punta Banda, passing through the Guadalupe Valley and Ensenada along the way. The beach house will be our home base as we will travel each day to our coastal activities. On our final day, after an awesome hike and tidepooling, we will head back to Tecate, where you will walk back over the border to your parked car.

The $680 cost includes a 3 day guided expedition with van transportation starting from the Tecate border and provided throughout the trip. You will be accompanied by your knowledgeable, seasoned (and of course fabulous!) bilingual guides. Two breakfasts, two picnic lunches and one dinner will be provided, one lunch and one dinner will be at local restaurants or homes and are not included in the cost of the trip. Lodging, boat excursions, and entrance to hiking areas are all included.

The trip includes optional ocean snorkeling and some challenging hiking. Boat trip may include splashing, ocean wave motion (bring Dramamine if you need it) and direct sun (bring hats and sunblock). Please make sure you are able to hike along sea cliffs and get in and out of a small boat. Snorkelers will need to have basic swimming experience and be able to climb up and down a ladder into a small boat. Bring your own equipment or rent it for an additional fee—visor, snorkel and fins: $43 USD, plus wetsuit: $85 total. You are also welcome to opt out of any activities if you are not comfortable with them.

The beach house is basic, includes bedding and towels, nothing fancy but is just steps away from a long, beautiful, swimmable sandy beach.

Date 3rd Thursday of the Month, April thru October 2026

      Time:  5:30-9:00 pm

      Cost: Free

      RSVP: None needed.

Note: This event is hosted by California Men's Gatherings with Great Outdoors, SAGA ski club, F.O.G., Pozabilities, and SDBears collaborating to support our LGBT+ community!

DESCRIPTION: Thanks go to Ted and Adrian for bringing supplies and to Ray (Kiwi) for coordinating delivery of the wood! We're ready for another great season of chilling together by the bay!

VOLUNTEERS: It would be great to have one or two people who can arrive early (around 4:30 or 5) to secure one of the fire rings. We could also use a third person capable of hauling wood to the site. Please let us know if you can do these simple but vital tasks.

      WHAT TO BRING:

      1) Potluck item and a beverage of your choice(Alcohol is prohibited in Mission Bay Park.)

Remember, we CAN have too many desserts, but we can never have too many entrees

      and sides.

       2) A beach chair if you'd like to sit. Bonus points if you bring a spare for others to use!

       3) A serving utensil if your dish needs one. A portable table, paper plates, cups, utensils, napkins or extra firewood are also much appreciated!

      4) A significant other, friend, or cuddle buddy.

DIRECTIONS: Take the I-8 freeway west toward Mission Bay, exit onto Mission Bay Drive and make a right, then merge into the far-left hand lane onto Ingraham Street, heading North, then make a left onto Vacation Rd as if you were heading into Paradise Point Resort (previously Pacific Princess Resort). Then an immediate Right before entering the resort to get to the side parking lot. We’ll be on the left (West) side of parking lot by the rest rooms. (Note: we're on the WEST side of Ingraham St. Don't confuse this spot with a similar one on the east side of the street.)

Please note: The two fire rings adjacent to the parking lot may be occupied by other groups. If that happens, keep walking up to the right, under the bridge, and we'll be at the first fire ring we can find.

      Boundary Waters Canoe Area:

      The Crown Jewel of Minnesota

      Sunday Sept 20 - Saturday Sept 26, 2026

Trip Description: Join us for this once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the crown jewel of Minnesota nature, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Located in northern Minnesota on the Canadian border, this area is famous for its pristine lakes, singing loons and great fishing. This trip will be a backpacking canoe trip, meaning every participant will work in community with others on the trip to share responsibilities like cooking, building fires, switching off paddling, and securing food supplies overnight. Trips to the BWCA are considered a right of passage in Minnesota culture, and I am excited to share this experience with you!

Note: Flights to/from MSP Airport are not included. Our backpacking trip will start at the bunkhouse the day (9/20) before our permit start date of Sept 21st (Mon) until the end of our permit on Sept 26th. Plan an extra day on both ends for air travel to/from MSP Airport and the drive from the BWCA to/from MSP Airport.

      Map Website:

Route Overview: Starting on Clearwater Lake (Entry Point #62) we will travel northeast by canoe to Mountain Lake where we will begin our paddle loop through the wilderness! Red line indicates our ~30 mile route. We will have two base camp days at Campsites #2/3 and #4/5 of the trip, averaging 7-8mi/day traveling.

      Distance: ~30miles

      Route Type: Loop

      Schedule:

      Sunday, Sept 20th

Arrive to MSP, drive to Outfitters (5-6 hours). Overnight stay at Clearwater Outfitters bunkhouse Entry Point #62. Equipment check.

      Monday, Sept 21st

Depart from entry location, Point #62 Clearwater Lake and paddle northeast to Mountain Lake, navigating one portage (80 rods) and camp on Mountain Lake. Note: Pending Outfitter confirmation, route may be done in reverse.

      Tuesday, Sept 22nd

Wake up and begin with 3 portages (65, 40, 140 rods) down Pigeon River. Paddle across Moose Lake, portage Pigeon River (125 rods), through North Fowl Lake, through 3 Royal River portages (100, 20, 60), paddle south throuth Little John Lake, paddle across McFarland Lake, and portage 10 rods to Pine Lake to camp for night.

      Wednesday, Sept 23rd

Base camp day. Enjoy camp and adventures in Pine Lake to Johnson Falls, hike portages to adjacent lake, or fishing!

      Thursday, Sept 24th

Canoe west across Pine Lake and portage 75 rods into Little Caribou Lake. Portage 25 rods into Caribou Lake to camp for night.

      Friday, Sept 25th

Base camp day. Enjoy camp and adventures in Caribou Lake!

      Saturday, Sept 26th

Canoe out of BWCA through 105 rod portage to Clearwater Lake to exit #62. Return supplies to Outfitters. Return to MSP for flights home

Cost: See per person registration type. This includes canoe rentals, permits, and Bunk House accommodations the night before, if available. Flights not included. Food and Travel (car rental/ride) coordination is recommended with the Trip Leader.

Cancellation/Refund: Refunds are available until Aug 1st, 2026. Unless an alternate attendee is confirmed, a refund will not be provided after 8/1/2026.

Travel: Coordination with the Trip Leader is encouraged. Flights are not included, but an early arrival Tuesday is recommended for the drive up to BWCA. You are responsible for your travel to the Outfitters, but Trip Leader assistance is available. Direct flights from San Diego to MSP are available through Sun Country and Delta Airlines. It is a 5-6 hour drive from the airport to the BWCA, so early arrival is critical.

Experience: This trip does not require previous canoe/portage experience, and is considered an intermediate route due to the number of portages and base camp day(s) included in the schedule. If you have never portaged or paddled, please let the Trip Leader know and they will be more than happy to explain skill requirements. We will be teaching these skills day 1 and on as well!

Weather: This is the end of the mosquito season, meaning mosquitos will be waning but this is always location dependent in the BWCA. This late in the season none are expected at this time. September in the BWCA at Clearwater Lake offers a mix of stable, warm early-month days and cool, unpredictable late-month conditions, with temperatures generally ranging from 40–60°F (4–16°C). Early September has fewer bugs and warm water, while late September brings fall colors and cooler nights.

Bring: 10 Essentials (no kidding, every person needs a personal first aid kit); water filtration; food for each meal plus extra snacks; water bottle and filter system; sleeping bag and pad; tent; appropriate footwear (land and water); layered clothing; jacket; rain gear; wide hat; compass; toilet paper & trowel; jet boil/compact camping stove; fire starter; headlamp; sunglasses; sunscreen; insect repellant; camera and entertainment (book, card game, etc).

Note: Some communal equipment will be utilized, like jet boils/stove and Duluth packs to reduce duplicative equipment being carried.

Other Considerations: As with any backcountry experience, this one is "Leave no Trace" - our trash comes out with us. Active bear area - mandatory use of either bear cannisters or hanging food sacks.

Great Outdoors: The Beginning of the Queer Outdoors Recreation Movement

Saturday Oct. 10th, 2026 at 10am via Zoom

The Beginning of the Queer Outdoors Recreation Movement is a presentation by California Great Outdoors journeying through the decades of the queer outdoors recreation movement, with the SoCal outdoors LGBT+ community being at the heart of the movement. Great Outdoors is the longest running queer outdoors organization in the United States with a rich history. We will travel through the decades, starting from when Great Outdoors was ideated in 1977 by founders Greg Carmack and Paul Breton to today’s thriving national and global queer outdoors recreation movement.

Join Great Outdoors Archivist Tyler Roosden as they set the stage with a historical account of The Beginning of the Queer Outdoors Recreation Movement through the archives of California Great Outdoors, ultimately culminating into a modern Leadership Studies approach to creating queer belonging in community. Our program will discuss themes like culture, technology, pride, recognition, and core values. Specific topics will include leadership training, awards programming, event planning, organizational design, gender equity, language, global pandemics, arts, access, and community collaboration. Our history is highlighted by the stories of BIPOC and queer trail blazers including volunteer-members Patrick McCollum, Darlene Bjork, Mack Gerighty, Dixie Paradise, Greg Carmack, Rowena Muldavin, Paul Breton, and Jamie Charles.

The virtual presentation, including 30 minute Q&A, will take place on Saturday October 10th from 10:00am to 11:30am PT.

This project was made possible thanks to the Lambda Archives of San Diego staff and ongoing archival support of ONE Archives at the USC Libraries (California Great Outdoors’ official archives).

Then an immediate Right before entering the resort to get to the side parking lot. We’ll be on the left (West) side of parking lot by the rest rooms. (Note: we're on the WEST side of Ingraham St. Don't confuse this spot with a similar one on the east side of the street.)

Please note: The two fire rings adjacent to the parking lot may be occupied by other groups. If that happens, keep walking up to the right, under the bridge, and we'll be at the first fire ring we can find.

The Great Outdoors 2026 All-Chapter Conference and Campout
Hosted by GO-SBVC at the beautiful Cachuma Lake

Into The Woods with the Great Outdoors—A Weekend Full of Adventure

Hello and welcome. Our story begins Friday afternoon as we welcome friends from every Great Outdoors chapter to beautiful Lake Cachuma. After settling into camp, join us for a GO-SBVC hosted Tea, a casual opportunity to enjoy light refreshments and to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. Dinner is on your own. As the evening falls, we'll gather for a special guest presentation in the spirit of celebrating the good nature of the Great Outdoors.

Saturday morning we wake to a hearty breakfast provided by GO-SBVC before the day's adventures begin. Great Outdoors Officers and Core Group members will gather for their annual corporate meetings, where the business of our organization is conducted. Anyone interested in learning more about how Great Outdoors operates or seeing the process firsthand is welcome to attend.

For those not attending the meetings there are several ways to enjoy the day. Local GO-SBVC members will lead you on a scenic guided hike through the beautiful Lake Cachuma area or guide you through an excursion into the nearby Santa Ynez Valley wine country. If you'd rather explore on your own you can visit the beautiful new Chumash Museum and Cultural Center to learn about the rich heritage of the area's original inhabitants or try your luck at the nearby Chumash Casino Resort, both just a short drive away.

Saturday afternoon brings a little friendly competition as the chapters square off in our spirited Horseshoe Tournament. Whether you're aiming for a perfect ringer or simply cheering from the sidelines, it's all about fun, laughter, and chapter pride.

As evening falls, we'll gather once again for one of the weekend's highlights—a fantastic GO-SBVC provided Loaded Baked Potato & Salad Bar accompanied by the Bring & Cook Your Own Meat on the BBQ. We've got two large BBQ grills and we'll be there to help for those unsure around the grill-just be sure and bring your meat. Enjoy a delicious meal while sharing stories around the campground before celebrating together at our annual Awards Ceremony, recognizing the volunteers and chapters that help make Great Outdoors thrive.

Then, as every good fairy tale deserves a musical ending, we'll enjoy a special live musical presentation to include audience participation. Raise your voice around the campfire as we celebrate another memorable year together.

Before everyone heads home on Sunday morning, we'll share a GO-SBVC provided continental breakfast, exchange hugs and goodbyes, and bid farewell until our paths cross again on another trail.

No magic beans are required—just your sense of adventure. We can't wait to welcome you Into the Woods with the Great Outdoors!

We have 6 RV spaces available (no hookups) for our RV travelers, along with parking space for 24 vehicles. RV spaces do not include a towed vehicle and there are no hookups. Whether you're driving, riding along as a passenger, a guest, or simply want to join for part of the weekend adventures, we welcome you to register in advance so that you can be a part of our 2026 All Chapter Conference and Campout.

If you are an RV traveler and require hookups there may be available sites, but you will need to check with the park https://www.countyofsb.org/cachuma-lake.

Docent tour includes the museum, historic ranch house, remains of adobe stage stop, the grounds, historical events and  gold panning.

Our docent-led tour includes the museum, the historic ranch house, the remains of the historic adobe stage stop, the beautiful grounds, and a chance to try your hand at gold panning. The Gilman Historic Ranch and Wagon Museum preserves, celebrates, and interprets the history of late 1800s California—spanning from the indigenous Cahuilla people to the exploration and settlement of Southern California and the San Gorgonio Pass. Once just a humble adobe hut, it evolved into a busy stage stop and general store before becoming an expansive ranch house. Today, it also houses the largest public collection of wagons, buggies, and stagecoaches in Southern California, making it a must-see for locals and tourists alike.

        Historical Context

Surrounded by cottonwoods and watered by three natural springs, the Gilman Ranch site has attracted people throughout history. The superb canyon location—with its exceptional food and water supply—offered a prime habitation site for the local Cahuilla Indians. Later, under Spanish rule, the site became part of the San Gorgonio Rancho, the farthest outlying cattle ranch of Mission San Gabriel.

In 1868, entrepreneur Newton Noble lived in the adobe, converted it into a stage stop, and opened the first post office in the San Gorgonio Pass. Noble’s property sat right along the Bradshaw Trail, a heavily traveled freight and stage route connecting Los Angeles to Arizona during the 1860s and 1870s. This trail originated from a network of traditional indigenous pathways that miner and freight driver William D. Bradshaw learned directly from Cahuilla and Maricopa guides. The route later became a vital communication corridor for federal troops expanding control over Arizona and New Mexico.

The ranch is also famously tied to the historic Willie Boy manhunt. Willie Boy, a Paiute Indian, wished to marry a young woman named Carlotta against her father’s wishes. While Carlotta's family was camped at Gilman Ranch working the seasonal fruit harvest, Willie Boy fatally shot her father and escaped with her, sparking one of the last great western manhunts.

        Palomar Mountain State Park

Friday through Sunday November 6-8, 2026 for 2 Nights!

Who says you have to book a flight to Mammoth just to see fall colors? Less than ninety minutes from San Diego, Palomar Mountain State Park serves as a lush, dramatic, floating oasis. Thanks to a moody unique microclimate that regularly traps coastal mist and heavy mountain fogs, this alpine island thrives in conditions far wetter and cooler than the dry valleys below. Wandering through its deep, shaded canyons, you’ll encounter magnificent stands of white fir, incense cedar, and massive pines—a majestic sanctuary with a rugged, high-altitude character that is giving total High Sierra energy. It’s a stunning, mist-shrouded escape where classic, crisp autumn magic is incredibly close to home.

To all those New England transplants swearing SoCal only has two seasons, take a hike! Under an autumn canopy, that is. Early November brings a spectacular transformation to Palomar Mountain's higher elevations. Sheltered among the deep green conifers, the native California black oaks (Quercus kelloggii) reach their peak peak color right around this time, erupting into brilliant crowns of vivid gold, copper, and warm orange.

Tired of getting fished on the apps? Time to head up the mountain and do it right. Kept perfectly chilled by the high altitude and regularly stocked with rainbow trout, Doane Pond is the ultimate spot to cast a line this weekend. Whether you're actually trying to reel something in or just looking to enjoy a quiet morning surrounded by gorgeous autumn leaves, the views here are a total catch.

Sitting at 5,438 feet, the historic fire tower on Boucher Hill offers the ultimate vantage point. Clear November days completely strip away the usual coastal haze, cutting the distortion so you can see straight across the Pauma Valley and past the Pacific coastline. On a crisp day, you can see all the way to Catalina Island floating on the horizon—no filters required. Has been listed in the Sierra Club's "Hundred Peak Section" since it was first published in 1946.

Dogs: leashed Dogs allowed in the campgrounds, on designated paved park roads, Myers Fire Road, but not on state park trails.

This one’s for the nerds! Get the Sheldon in you ready to geek out at Palomar Observatory. Owned and operated by Caltech, Palomar Observatory has been a powerhouse of deep-space research since it opened in 1948. The massive, Art Deco-styled dome houses the historic 200-inch Hale Telescope. When it saw first light in 1949, it was a triumph of engineering, reigning as the world's largest effective telescope until the late 1970s. Please note, however, that guided tours will not be available this weekend.

        PACE/PHYSICAL EFFORT/CULTURE SHOCK

        • This trip has a moderate pace; you should be able to walk up to 3 miles per day.
        • There is one long day on the bus from Aswan to Abu Simbel, about 7 hours in the bus round-trip.
        • Some days start early, departing the hotel at 8 am.
        • The weather in Egypt in November is warm, 75- 85F in the day, 55-60F at night. Egypt gets almost no rain.
        • Egyptians are friendly but sometimes aggressive salespeople (they figure they have 10 seconds to get your attention as you walk past their shops). They drive a hard bargain and prices are rarely labeled. Travelers need to learn to bargain effectively.
        • Poverty and litter are sometimes shocking and depressing.

        TRAVEL INSURANCE

Although not required, GeoTours and GO strongly recommends that trip participants purchase travel insurance.

        • GeoTours has partnered with Generali Global Assistance (GGA), a well-established provider of travel insurance. You can use this GeoTours-Generali link, and the premium will be the same as going straight to the Generali site.
        • GGA’s ESSENTIAL policy covers Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Medical Evacuation, Medical costs, and Lost/Stolen Baggage. Trip Cancellation coverage means that travel insurance will reimburse non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason. Cancellation coverage only works if you purchase the insurance BEFORE a sickness or injury forces you to cancel, and an insurance claim requires a physician’s written advice that you should cancel your trip due to your illness or injury.
        • GGA's ESSENTIAL coverage costs about $250 for a 60-year-old, $3900 trip cost (airfare + GeoTours price), November 13 – 24, 2026. Cost depends on age and is less for younger travelers, more for older travelers.
        • You can also compare travel insurance policies from other providers at squaremouth.com.
        • If you travel frequently, you should consider an annual policy from Allianz.

        CANCELLATION POLICY

To cancel your participation, you must inform GeoTours in writing or by email. Cancellation date is the date when GeoTours receives your written notice.

*Cancellation penalty is the amount shown below PLUS any non-recoverable expenses already paid on behalf of the passenger, such as non-refundable tickets or hotel rooms.

        Personal Considerations & Safety:

While several LGBTQ groups visit Egypt every year with no problems, all participants will need to understand and acknowledge the following cultural notes to ensure the group's safety:

Egypt is generally not considered safe for openly LGBTQ+ travelers due to conservative social norms, lack of legal protections, and potential persecution under "morality" laws, with arrests and hostility possible, so extreme discretion, avoiding PDA and dressing modestly are crucial for those who choose to visit.

        Key Considerations for LGBTQ+ Travelers:

        • Legal Situation:

Homosexuality isn't explicitly outlawed, but "debauchery" and "public morals" laws are used to prosecute LGBTQ+ individuals, with severe penalties like long prison sentences.

        • Social Environment:

Public attitudes are conservative, and while some tourists have positive experiences, hostility and potential violence are risks.

        • Discretion is Key:

Avoid all public displays of affection (PDA), even for straight couples, and don't wear LGBTQ+ symbols like rainbow attire.

        • Safety in Numbers:

Group tours and reputable tour operators (some specifically LGBTQ+-focused) offer better safety and navigation than solo travel.

        • Accommodation:

Staying in larger, international hotel chains (Marriott, Hilton) can offer more anonymity than smaller places.

        • Online & Apps:

Use extreme caution with social media apps like Grindr.

        • Gender Non-Conformity:

Transgender individuals may face scrutiny; binding for FTM individuals is suggested to avoid unwanted attention.

        Tips for a Safer Trip:

        • Dress modestly: Blend in by adhering to local cultural norms.
        • Be discreet: Don't openly discuss your sexuality or gender identity.
        • Consider a fake ring: Wearing a fake wedding/engagement ring can deflect unwanted questions from locals.
        • Stay aware: Be mindful of your surroundings, especially in less touristy areas or at night.

While many travelers report successful trips by taking precautions, the risk of legal trouble or harassment exists, making it essential to prioritize safety and cultural sensitivity.

This is simply a notice and if you are interested please list your name on this GO registration.   When GeoTour's registration opens you will be sent a link for registration.

        • Dos Picos County Park Trip Notes

Dos Picos County Park is located in Ramona, California. Its name is Spanish for "two peaks," derived from the two prominent mountains nearby. The surrounding ranch land and steep rocky slopes help preserve its secluded atmosphere.

This park is known for its magnificent Oak trees.  The landscape is a mixture of chaparral, open grassland, and oak woodland. Coyote, fox, possum, skunk, and raccoon are all seen in the park regularly.

The city of Ramona is minutes away when driving.  You may purchase food and other supplies there.

Maximum RV length is 40 feet.  All sites have E/W. Several sites will be dedicated as tent sites.  These sites can have three tents, max and two cars.  The water spigots at these sites are unique.  It is housed in a plastic box that sits below ground level.

Tent campers, all the sites are gravel.   Your tent will likely be pitched on gravel.  Please bring blow-up mattresses or cots to sleep on, so you are not sleeping on gravel.  Tents should also bring extension cords.

At each site there is room for an RV and tow vehicle, or two vehicles.  Extra vehicles can park in the overflow lot for a total of $9, which is paid by GOPS.  The overflow parking lot is NOT close.  It’s located on the opposite side of the campground from our sites, so car camping would NOT be a good choice, please bring a tent.

Leashed dogs are welcome at $1/night/dog.  Campers will pay for their own dogs upon check-in at the campground.

Sites 63 & 69 are ADA sites.  If you have an ADA placard, please let the trip leader know.

We will have access to the indoor pavilion and its outdoor picnic area.  It is located in the middle of all our sites.  There is a massive fire pit. The use of that pavilion and its outdoor space was an additional cost that was figured into the cost of this campout.  Typical weather in this area in November is high 73, low 42.

Cancellation policy: cancel for full refund minus a $10 fees on or before Nov 10th, 2024.
