The San Jacinto Wildlife Area is a roughly 20,000-acre preserve in western Riverside County, managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and established in 1982. It's known as a major birding spot — it's part of an Audubon Society-designated Important Bird Area of Global Concern, and over 300 bird species have been recorded there. The area includes about 900 acres of restored wetlands and is home to numerous waterfowl, wading birds, and jackrabbits. The ponds draw waterfowl and shorebirds against a backdrop of Mt. San Gorgonio and the San Bernardino Mountains, while the surrounding grasslands attract eagles and overwintering raptors, along with species like Loggerhead Shrikes, Western Meadowlarks, and wintering sparrows. Notably, the wildlife area includes a constructed freshwater marsh that filters reclaimed water, the first state wildlife area to use reclaimed water to enhance its wetlands. GOPS member Tom Carlson will guide us through the preserve, explaining the wildlife along the way.
