Welcome to the Los Angeles
Chapter of Great Outdoors!

Great Outdoors is a Los Angeles area gay, lesbian, bi-sexual & transgender group for hiking, camping, fitness and other activities in the outdoors. LBGTQ+ Angelenos can join us for friendly camaraderie and fun adventures including urban stair walks, kayaking, backpacking, roller skating, museum tours, picnics, game nights, and other fun events!  We are all-volunteer-run, and explore near and far, from day hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains, to camping trips in the Sierras, Joshua Tree, Yosemite and Zion National Parks.

Commonsense Tips to #RecreateResponsibly during the pandemic:

#RecreateResponsibly to Protect Yourself, Others, and the Outdoors

During this public health crisis, spending time in outdoor spaces has become even more important for many Americans. Yet these unusual circumstances mean that all of us, from seasoned outdoor enthusiasts to families heading out to their local park for the first time, could use a little guidance about how to stay safe. The Recreate Responsibly guidelines offer a starting point for getting outside to keep yourself healthy and to maintain access to our parks, trails, and beaches.

Update on Great Outdoors Activities and the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

June 9, 2020: We are starting to offer small group-sized outings again to see how they go.  We know everyone wants to start hiking, socializing etc. but we want to do so safely with extreme respect and caution for all our participants. Check your member newsletters, this website and our socials for the latest activities. And as always, volunteer your time and energy to help us plan some new activities in the Great Outdoors!

March 17, 2020 - Previous message: Due to the developing situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Great Outdoors LA is cancelling its events in the near term to support the efforts to slow the community spread of the virus.

In the meantime, do enjoy the Great Outdoors on your own, even with a simple walk outside. We all need the fresh air and clarity that only the Great Outdoors can provide.  The LA Times advises that you can continue enjoying outdoor activity on your own (hiking, surfing, cycling, trail running, jogging, etc.) but strictly practice all the social distancing recommendations (don't go if you're sick; stay 6 feet apart or more from other people).

We recommend that you follow the news releases and advisory page from the California Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) everyday guidelines to prevent the spread of any respiratory illness – including COVID-19 (click here).

“Everyone needs to help us and take precautions in everything you do. In the absence of vaccines social distancing is the best tool that we have which means everyone needs to help us avoid non-essential activities.” - LA County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.  Avoid close contact with people who are sick.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.  If you are 65 years old or older - self-isolate in your home.  If you are 64 years old or younger - keep a physical distance - stay 6 feet away from others.  Stay home when you are sick.  Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.  Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

Thank you for your understanding, and stay safe everyone. We'll get through this, and look forward to getting outside together again!
