DAY HIKE - GROTTOS OVERLOOK - MECCA HILLS
Description:
On this hike we will explore some of the “less traveled” areas around Sheep Hole Oasis, Hidden Oasis, and the Grottos. We will not be going to the later two but rather to the overlooking ridge to the south.
Parking will be 5 miles up Box Canyon Rd from Painted Canyon Rd. From there we will hike to Sheep Hole Oasis, continue across to Hidden Springs Canyon wash to the next wash to the east. From there we will hike to the ridge above Hidden Palms and the Grottos. After lunch on the ridge we will return by the same path to Hidden Palms Canyon wash and go part way up the wash and enter slot canyons that will take us to the ridge northeast of Sheep Hole Oasis and back to the parking area.
This is a moderate 6.5 mile hike with an approximate 1100 ft elevation gain. It involves hiking on trails, in washes, scrambling in several areas, and walking along the top of ridges.
Dress appropriately including good hiking boots. Bring snacks, lunch, and adequate hydration remembering that there is little shade and it can be a bit warm in Mecca Hills especially if the temperature happens to be above average.
We will meet at 9:00 AM in front of Hunters and car pool to the Mecca Hills returning around 4:30 PM. Vehicles with good clearance are necessary for those planning to drive since the parking is in a wash.
