4/26/2022 - Until further notice, all GOPS events require all attendees to be fully vaccinated and abide by the GOPS COVID policy - CLICK HERE. For outdoor events, you'll need to self certify you are full vaccinated.  For indoor events, you must submit your proof of vaccination.  Send your proof of vaccination to: GOPSCOVID@gmail.com or text it to: 760-902-1850.  

California has lifted its stay at home order.  Great Outdoors outdoor events are now allowed but must be consistent with the requirements for gatherings set in the California Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

    This discovery hike will be an exploration beyond the normal confines of the trail on a moderately strenuous backcountry hike in the San Jacinto Wilderness. There will be some deviation from the trail to “discover” locations not typically seen by the average day hiker.

    • Distance: 5 to 6 miles 
    • Total Elevation: 1100' 
    • Difficulty: Moderately Strenuous - High elevation - hike starts at 8500'
    • Type: Out and back loop
    • Return time: Early afternoon
    • Destination: To be revealed on the hike

    • We will depart on the 10 AM tram.

    Tickets for the Tram:  $28.95 Adult $26.95 Senior. Summer and Annual passes available. If online tickets are sold-out or grayed-out for any day, tickets are still available, but can only be purchased on the day of your visit at the Tram’s Valley Station on a first-come, first-served basis.     • Distance: 5-mile hike with 800-foot elevation gain
    • Pace: Moderate with lunch break
    • Difficulty: Moderate except for a few strenuous climbs on level trails. Suitable for physically fit beginners.
    • Meeting time: No later than 9:30 a.m. so we can be in line in time to take the 10 a.m. tram.

    Escape the summer heat by taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to an elevation of more than 8,500 feet to hike in the Mt. San Jacinto Wilderness. Temperatures at the tram’s Mountain Station can be 30 degrees cooler, so check at https://www.pstramway.com/weather/ before you leave home to determine how to dress.

    Tickets for the Tram:  $28.95 Adult $26.95 Senior. Summer and Annual passes available.     Amenities: Restrooms have flush toilets, hot showers that take quarters,  Campsites have picnic tables, fire rings (although wood fires may not be allowed due to fire restrictions), and drinking water. The town of Idyllwild is 1/2 mile away with shops and restaurants.

    Amenities For Tents:  The sites are pretty flat and without much shade. Tent campers will share the site with an RV. Restroom and showers are located uphill of the campsites.

    Amenities For RVs:  There are no services for RVs at the campsites.  There is a dump site located nearby at Lake Hemet.  Generators may be operated between 7 am and 10 pm.

    What to Bring: Ten Essentials, camp chair, daypack for hiking, camping/cooking gear, food, warm/cool/wet weather clothing, quarters for showers. Bring a dish to share at the potluck dinner. The are water spigots located in the camp.  Campfires are currently not allowed in the campground during our stay. 

    Consider going green! - Please bring your own reusable plates, cups, mugs, eating utensils, etc.

    Pets: Well-behaved pets are welcomed. $2 per day pet fee payable upon arrival. Must be kept on leash.  Please pick up after your pet.

Just 25 minutes from Big Bear Lake, the camp is at 6400’ elevation in the secluded Barton Flats area off of Highway 38 nestled in alpine and fir forest.

    Facilities: This group campground offers one large group campsite, available for tent and RV camping. There are no utility hookups at the site and roads, as well as the parking area, are gravel and dirt. The site is equipped with multiple tables, and campfire circle . Flush (4) toilets and drinking water are provided at the campground. Pay showers and  dump station at nearby at Barton Flats campground. Tent pads are shaded but group areas are primarily in the open. We will have a propane fire-pit for the group. No nearby bike trails.  San Bernardino National Forest information: Click here .

    Nestled mile-high in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, within the historic farming community of Oak Glen, lies The Wildlands Conservancy’s Oak Glen Preserve. The 2,189 acre preserve is home to the Conservancy’s Southern California Montane Botanic Garden, Los Rios Rancho and apple orchards. The Preserve includes prominent peaks: Wilshire (8,707 feet) and Galena (9,324 feet) and a network of trails within the preserve.

    Our camp is located at Oak Glen Retreat in the village of Oak Glen and adjacent toThe Oak Glen Preserve. RV sites are 30 AMP  hookup and are located across from the tent sites. Tents sites include electricity and water; 2 tents and 2 vehicles per tent site. 1 RV and tow vehicle per RV site. Open campfire permitted only if weather conditions are favorable.       DAY HIKE LEADER - SECTION I

                             8am - 12 pm

      Be a Hike Leader!  Not just someone who knows the way, but someone who applies safety, best practices, fun, and local knowledge to make a successful outing. In addition to the course outline we will discuss any issues with past hikes and plan for future hikes. We will review basic hike leader procedures and techniques and latest technology and information.  Completing this course will provide participants with Day Hike Leader Certification. Also a good refresher for hike leaders.

      Prerequisites: Great Outdoors member (click here to join). The course is  for anyone interested in becoming a hiker leader, learning more about leading effective hikes, or becoming a more confident and capable hiker.

      This Hike Leader Certification course is for hikers who are interested in learning new skills as well as experienced hike leaders  who are looking to update or refresh their outdoor leadership skills. It is suitable for all ranges of hiker abilities, from novice up to very experienced hikers.

      Objectives: Introduce participants to the skills, knowledge and attitudes of a trained hike leader, including appropriate risk management for day hikes. Present skills for leading a safe, environmentally responsible and enjoyable hike.

      Content/Topics Covered:  Hike planning, description, screening participants, trail group management, emergency management, medical issues on the trail, map reading and navigation, outdoor techniques, environmental protection, and problem solving techniques and scenarios.

      Course Format: The training includes online instruction with group discussion and problem solving  applications and trail-based scenarios.

      TRIP LEADERSHIP - OVERNIGHT EVENTS - SECTION II

       1pm - 5 pm

      One of the premier features of Great Outdoors is overnight trips. As a leader you will propose, research and design overnight trips. You will manage and administer the trip using leadership and group management skills. Completing this course will provide participants with Trip Leadership Certification.

      Course Outline:

      • Create a new trip or update a former trip.

      • Planning, scouting, securing reservations.

      • Finances and budget.

      • Create a trip description and promotion.

      • Secure all logistics including any permits, and support staff as necessary.

      • Communicate with participants to provide information and answer questions.

      • Conducting your trip, safety issues, group management issues - preventing and solving.

      8 AM to 9 AM start the morning at a GO member’s Desert Hot Springs home with Continental Breakfast that includes oatmeal, fresh fruit, Coachella Valley dates, Starbucks Coffee, and pastries from Canter’s Bakery on Fairfax.  Registration fee of $5 for food expenses.

      :  Have your credit card ready as you'll need it to pay your registration fees (breakfast & optional spa) within 15 mins.  There are no refunds for this event.

      9 AM - energized with breakfast, drive/carpool 10 minutes to the Long Canyon trailhead in Desert Hot Springs; directions click here. The hike is rated a moderate 4 miles total out and back in with minimum elevation gain. This trail is located in a wide wash between canyons leading into Joshua Tree National Park and was recently designated as part of the Sand to Snow National Monument.

      After taking in the sites, we retrace our steps back to the trailhead and move onto Miracle Springs Resort & Spa for lunch at their indoor/outdoor Capri Restaurant and then “take the waters” in any of the mineral pools of different temperatures. 

      We have a special discounted group rate for the spa admission:  $9 senior / $13 adult.  Lunch not included. Option to sign up for the Spa and pay when you register for this event. No refunds.

      Make sure you go to the correct Spa resort. There are two adjacent resorts, go to the Miracle Springs Resort & Spa to the North of the other spa, address is: Miracle Springs Resort & Spa 10625 Palm Dr, Desert Hot Springs, CA 

      Bring:   Swimsuit - Towel 

      Ten Essentials (click here), water, 1 or 2 liters recommended, snacks, sun protection, layered clothing , hiking poles may be helpful. Carry Emergency Contact Information (ICE). Sturdy hiking footwear with good tread and adequate drinking water are required. Inclement weather may cancel.

      SAVE THE DATE

      Dos Picos County Park offers partial hookup sites (water/electric 20/30/50 amps), with paved driveways, fire rings, and tables. Coin-operated, hot showers, restrooms with flush toilets, and a waste water dump station. One tent and one RV (< or = 45ft.) or two tents will share each each site.  Both inhabitants will have access to the water and electricity. There is plenty of overflow parking for extra vehicles.

      Tuesday, 

      • 9:00 am - Hike the local nature trails in the park and explore the marshes/lake, bird watching
      • 12:00 pm - Carpool to Del Rey Mission and Steam & Gas Engine Museum (there are admission fees you will have to pay)

      Wednesday, 

      •  9:00 am - pack up and clean up, say our tearful goodbyes
