GREAT OUTDOORS is the largest gay outdoor recreational organization in the West. The group was founded in 1980 by gay leaders who felt the time had come for a viable healthy alternative to the bars. Since that time, Great Outdoors has become one of the most popular and respected groups in the gay community at large.

There are four Great Outdoors chapters - Los Angeles, Orange County/Long Beach, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara/Ventura County. Our outings include not only camping and hiking in the best wilderness areas, but river rafting, canoeing, skiing, and social activities.

I'D LIKE TO CAMP, BUT I HAVEN'T GOT A THING TO WEAR! WON'T I NEED A LOT OF EXPENSIVE GEAR? Absolutely not! There are many camping stores that rent everything you'll need in the way of tents, sleeping bags, camp stoves, even parkas - and at reasonable prices. Chances are you'll be able to borrow some items from your fellow Great Outdoor members. We want you to have a good time, and we'll do whatever we can to make sure you do!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP? As a member of Great Outdoors you will receive a newsletter and a periodic calendar that features a schedule of all chapter's activities. You will also receive a membership card and discounted rates on activities sponsored by Great Outdoors. As we are a non-profit, all volunteer group, you will have an opportunity to participate in the planning of outings and the operation of your club. In addition to general meetings, each chapter has a business meeting once a month called a CORE group meeting. All members are encouraged to become active in their respective chapters.

I LIKE BEING OUTDOORS, BUT MY MOST RUGGED EXPERIENCE WAS GOING TO A MOTEL IN TAHOE THAT HAD BLACK & WHITE TV. Not to worry. We try to plan a variety of outings that built everyone - from mountain climbers to those who want to drive to a campsite. Each outing has a trip leader who will provide you with a set of trip notes. These trip notes include everything you need to know about the outing, such as clothing, directions, and cost and carpooling information, and gear you will need.
