Museums of the Arroyo

It's fun, It's festive and only one day per year. The five museums located along the Arroyo Seco are opening their doors for one day, free of charge. We'll meet at the Gambol House at 11:00 AM. Don't miss this rare opportunity to see The Gambol House, Heritage Square, LA Police Historical Musuem, Pasadena Museum of History and the Southwest Museum of the American Indian.

Huntington Harbor Spring Kayak

Great Outdoors returns to the elegant waters of Huntington Harbour. Known for its multi-million dollar waterfront residences, there is more to this area than expensive real estate. Our tour takes us to the verge of the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge, a 920-acre salt marsh which is home to a number of endangered species.

Wheeler Gorge Car Camp

The Wheeler Gorge Campground is located off Highway 33, north of Ojai. The roads are paved and the vegetation is a mix of trees and chaparral. The north fork of the Matilija Creek runs through the campground providing recreational fishing and swimming opportunities. Check back for trip notes

AIDS Life Cycle Bike Ride

Great Outdoors has our own team of 10 riders (as of January 11) who will participate in the seventh annual 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. We need roadies, riders and support. Click the link to join the Team. Funds raised benefit the charitable work of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center.

Serrano Car Camp

Whether it's climbing the hills, Geocacheing, or just sitting around the camp fire, the Serrano Campground near Big Bear There is lots of entertaining stuff to do, and it is a great campground. There's loads of outdoors recreation available close by such as swimming, fishing, and hiking, so you won't get bored. Going for a hike on the Seven Oaks Trail is always a great adventure.

San Simeon Corporate Jamboree

San Simeon State Park is one of the oldest units of the California State Park System. The coastal bluffs and promontories of the scenic park offer unobstructed views of the ocean and rocky shore. The park includes the Santa Rosa Creek Natural Preserve, the San Simeon Natural Preserve and the Pa-nu Cultural Preserve which were established in 1990. A visit to the Hearst Castle is also being planned. Check back for Trip Notes

Hetch Hetchy Backpack Hike

If you really want to getaway from the crowds and the noise this summer, escape to the High Sierra. You will decend from White Wholf to the canyon floor on the first day, camping near the river. Then begin the climb to 9900 feet returning at last to the starting point. You will need to qualify for this trip so see the tripnotes for details

Mount Laguna Car Camp

Camping here is a bit more rugged than we often do, but it does have pay-showers. Set among the pines and oak, the scenery is spectacular. Due to fires in the area, this campgound is currently closed, but we hope that by the time August roles around the campground will be open again.

Joshua Tree (All-Chapter)

Joshua Tree is beautiful. Joshua Tree is grotesque. Joshua Tree is peaceful, adventurous, freezing, sweltering, and a million other contradictions rolled into one. It is, at first glance, a desert wasteland. And yet, with it’s strange but fascinating plant life, balanced boulders, scenic hiking trails, and spectacular night skies, Joshua Tree has become a Great Outdoors staple.

Santa Rosa Plateau Hike

We will hike in a classic California landscape of wind-rippled grasses, swaying poppies, statuesque oak trees, trickling streams, vernal pools, and a dazzling assortment of native plants (over 460 at last count) and animals. All who visit the reserve are struck by its timelessness and its insularity.

Thanksgiving Weekend

For Thanksgiving this year we are going to Anza-Borrego State Park. This, largest of all state parks boasts 12 wilderness areas and miles of hiking trails. Magic Mountain Fright Fest

The park is open from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm. We will play during the day then, at 6:00 pm the park transforms into Fright Fest. Some rides turn off the lights and Colossus runs backwards. There are mazes and haunted houses to explore. Contact tripleader Jay Crawley

Great Outdoors Conference 2007

This year, the Annual Great Outdoors Conference is being hosted by our Palm Springs Chapter. We will be camping in the Cathedral City Resort which has both tent and RV sites. Lots of fun activities are planned including a guided exploration of the Mud Volcanos at the Salton Sea and an afternoon hike exploring Indian Canyons.

Newport Back Bay Kayak Trip

Far from the roar of the motor boats you´re skimming through acres of placid wetlands. We´ll enjoy the fascinating array of wildlife that can be found only during this season, when as many as 35,000 migratory birds make this estuary, known more properly as Upper Newport Bay, their temporary home. Point Mugu Car Camp

Point Mugu State Park, located in the Santa Monica Mountains, features five miles of ocean shoreline, rocky bluffs, sandy beaches, sand dunes, rugged hills and uplands, two major river canyons and wide grassy valleys dotted with sycamores, oaks and a few native walnuts. There are more than 70 miles of hiking trails. The beach features swimming, body surfing and surf fishing. The park includes the jagged pinnacles of the Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area.
