Orange County Long Beach Chapter

Located in the Los Padres National Forest on the scenic banks of the Matilija Creek in a mountain canyon at just 1100’ of elevation, Wheeler Gorge is a favorite campground of many of our members. It offers a convenient location and shady campsites. The stream may be low this time of year but it still is not silent as it meanders through a creek bed nestled among huge boulders. This stream and its branches travel the length of the campground. Old oak and sycamore trees shade campsites. This year we are including a wine tasting visit to a small winery located on the outskirts of Ojai.

There is running water, barbecue and campfire fire rings that are in or near almost every campsite.  The weather should be warm and ideal for a night hike after our usual potluck dinner on Saturday night. Every campsite is unique so it feels more like wilderness than it really is…you really have to see it for yourself. Please bring a bundle of firewood for after the potluck on Saturday evening.

From Orange County you would go North on the Santa Ana (5) freeway to the 101 freeway interchange.  Make the quick transition to the 101 freeway and continue to go North past Ventura to the turnoff for Ojai-which is Highway 33 East.  Go 14 miles inland to the 5th signal (Von’s store on your left) to sign indicating “Maricopa and 33 North” turn left. Just seven miles more going through two short tunnels and you are there !

Long Beach varies only in that you start out on the 405 freeway going north to the 101 Freeway North. Proceed to highway 33 east. (Follow the directions above from there.)
