Whale of a Day is being held this year on Saturday March 4th 2006. it’s a day of family fun and education celebrating the annual migration (December through April) of the Pacific gray whale. Situated on the grounds of the Point Vicente Coast Guard Facility (adjacent to the temporarily closed Interpretative Center), this festival is an excellent opportunity to bring your family and friends to view the whale’s passage and the chance to see other marine mammals such as dolphins, sea lions, and seals. Parking and Shuttle Service is available at Long Point (The old Marineland location). More detailed information is available at www.whaleofaday.com

Whale of a Day activities include educational programs, children’s games, arts and crafts, storytelling, and more! The bake sale, opportunity drawings and vendor and food booths are always popular with the crowd. Representatives from Sea World, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Marine Mammal Care Center, George F Canyon Nature Center, Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, South Bay Wildlife Rehab, California Native Plant Society, El Dorado Nature Center, and Ladera Linda Discovery Room are some of the organizations that have been present for past celebrations with information and exhibits. We expect most of these organizations to join us each year. Another popular highlight, offered in cooperation with the U. S. Coast Guard, are tours of the Point Vicente Lighthouse.

Proceeds from the day’s events benefit Los Serenos de Point Vicente, the non-profit volunteer organization serving the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, and the nature areas surrounding Ladera Linda Community Center.

Great Outdoors will be meeting at the Point Vincente Interpretive Center at 10 am. For more information call Jay Crowley (562) 537-2056
