Orange County/Long Beach Chapter
Great Outdoors
Orange County Long Beach Chapter

This moderate loop hike gives us a comprehensive overview of the Santa Rosa Plateau Reserve. Passing through one of the state’s few remaining Engelmann oak woodlands, we will hike on maintained trails to one of the largest vernal pools in California. These seasonal ponds support fairy shrimp, wintering waterfowl, and several species of endangered plants. Wildflowers abound as we hike on to our lunch stop at two adobe buildings of the former Santa Rosa Ranch. At around 150 years old, these are Riverside County's oldest buildings. We will then loop back to the cars through more woodland and flowers.

Where to Meet: We will meet at 8:00 am at the rideshare meeting point in Orange. Traveling North on the 55 Freeway, exit at Lincoln Ave. At the bottom of the ramp merge onto Lincoln heading west. Go under the freeway and make a left onto Tustin St. heading South. We meet in the Park & Ride lot on the left (east) side of the Tustin St.. From here we will reduce cars and travel for about 1.5 hrs to the Reserve near Temecula.

What to Bring: Daypack, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, 2 quarts of water, lunch, snacks, long sleeve shirt, pants and rain/ wind gear. A pile jacket, sweater or sweatshirt might be nice for the lunch break. The hike is in partially shaded oak and grass woodland. If it is a nice day I plan on wearing shorts but will carry long pants. Lug soled boots are always recommended. No dogs or other pets. $2 per person admission.  Bring change of clothes, shoes, and money for early dinner at “The Mill” in old Murrieta. Menu is inexpensive and includes Pizza ~Pasta~Salads.

Driving Directions: If you are late, (or live in the Inland Empire area) drive on your own:  Take the 15 south to Clinton Keith exit in Murrieta; turn right and head south for about 6 miles.  Continue past the Visitor’s Center on your left.  Road then turns sharply right.  Watch for parking lot on your left (Hidden Valley Trailhead).  Park here.  We should arrive around 9:45 am.

Sign-up: None required, just show up ready to hike.
